Welcome to the Molecular Muscle Physiology Laboratory

Research Focus

The Molecular Muscle Physiology Laboratory is headed by Prof. Marni D. Boppart

The focus of our laboratory is to understand the molecular and cellular basis for skeletal muscle adaptation to exercise.

Our research specifically focuses on examining the extent to which the α7β1 integrin serves as a mechanosensor and intrinsic modulator of myofiber growth following resistance exercise. This information can be used to address important clinical questions, such as whether loss of integrin localization and/or function provides the basis for delayed myofiber growth observed with natural aging or following a prolonged period of immobilization. The ultimate goal of our work is to create novel therapies to effectively prevent and treat disability, alone or in combination with traditional rehabilitation strategies.
